Tom Funk's 'What's It Gonna Be?' is a really enjoyable listen from start to finish. The blend of P-Funk and Neo-Soul influences comes through clearly, and the guest spots from Omar, Andre Espeut and Valentina Russo give the ten tracks a nice variety. It sits well alongside classic Marvin Gaye and Lonnie Liston Smith records without feeling like a copy. The vinyl itself sounds warm and clean, and the tracklist flows nicely across both sides. If you like soulful, funky modern soul with real musicianship, this one is worth picking up.
